Allyce (Borgen) St. Michel
Allyce Lorraine (Borgen) St. Michel, 93, of Halstad, MN, died on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Halstad Living Center, Halstad. She was born on December 7, 1918, in Mary Township, Norman County, to Ansgar and Mary Hazel (Robinson) Borgen. Allyce was one of nine brothers and sisters. Following her graduation from Moorhead High School in 1936, Allyce worked at Bertha’s Dress Shop in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. She returned in 1939 to begin studies at Business College. After finishing the course, Allyce was employed by Wadena Lumber Yard and Stern & Fields, a men’s clothing store in Wadena, MN, as a bookkeeper. On October 19, 1944, Allyce enlisted into the United States Navy. She was trained at the Navy Training School at Hunter College, Bronx, NY; Allyce served at Storekeeper School at Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, GA, and at a commissary store in the Philadelphia Naval Yard, Philadelphia, PA. She served until August 16, 1946, when Allyce was honorably discharged. From 1946 to 1947, Allyce worked for the Veteran’s Administration in Fargo. On May 30, 1947, Allyce was united in marriage to Joe St. Michel in Fargo. Together they owned and operated a General Mercantile in St. Hilaire from 1947 to 1960. They moved to Halstad in 1960, where they purchased the Hartz Foods Store, and operated the business until 1978, when they retired. They spent time traveling together until Joe’s death in 1989. Allyce was an active member of Halstad Lutheran Church, its Ladies Aid, and the American Legion Auxiliary in Halstad. She entered the Halstad Living Center on March 15, 2012. Allyce’s quiet nature was balanced by her strong and determined spirit. Her belief in her abilities allowed Allyce to be independent throughout her life. Her sense of humor was witty and subtle. Playing golf, working crossword puzzles, gardening and crafts filled her free time. Allyce was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. May God bless her memory. Allyce is survived by six children: Lorraine St. Michel (David Nelson), Moorhead, MN; Teresa St. Michel, Phoenix, AZ; Tony (Jann), Dilworth, MN; Tim (Paula), Grandin, ND; Rob, Rugby, ND; Kevin, Halstad, MN; Thirteen grandchildren: Michelle Schultz, Moorhead, MN; Paul (Jen) Nelson, Grandin, ND; Jamie (Angie) Elliott, Moorhead, MN; Michel Morgan, Phoenix, AZ; Noah St. Michel, Fargo, ND; Rachel Ruth, Dilworth, MN; Shannon Burton, Fargo, ND; Tamara Hedberg, Temple, TX; Callista St. Michel, Carthage, NY; Mark St. Michel, Fargo, ND; Evan St. Michel, Bottineau, ND; Erin (Brady) Michel, Mohall, ND; and Ethan St. Michel, Rugby, ND; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters: Helen Davis, Eden Prairie, MN; Jean Matheson, Minneapolis, MN; and Donna Sweeney, Billings, MT; many cousins, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joe, 1989, sons, Leonard and Stephen, brothers: Robert, Arnold and Vernon; and sisters: Lois Ranta and Carol Larsen.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at 11am in the Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad, MN.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm in the Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN.
Burial will be in the Halstad North Cemetery, Halstad, MN.
